Pulaski Tunnel Trail Hike and Stay Package

April 19-October 15, 2018

  • 1 Night in a deluxe queen room, double occupancy
  • 2 Freshly made box lunches
  • Shuttle to and from the trailhead

In 1910, the Big Burn, the largest wildfire in American history, devastated the mountains of the Pacific Northwest. This staggering fire, which surrounded Historic Wallace, Idaho, occurred during a 2 week period in August, burning over 3 million acres. In North Idaho alone, in just 3 days, it destroyed 880,000 acres of ancient forest.

Heroic legends were made of the brave fire fighters, forest service rangers and entire towns who fought back. The Pulaski Tunnel Trail (5 minutes north of Wallace) traces the route that Big Ed Pulaski and his 45 man fire-fighting crew followed during their escape from the fires. In a legendary feat of heroism, Big Ed ordered his men to shelter in a tunnel while the fire raged over them, saving all but 6 of his crew.

Come to Wallace and hike the now beautifully scenic Pulaski Trail in the Idaho Panhandle National Forest. Trace the steps of Big Ed and his crew along the west fork of Placer Creek for 2 miles (4 miles round trip) to the Nicholson mine adit, better known as the Pulaski Tunnel. Interpretive signs tell the story of that calamitous summer – the fire, the people, the mountains and the towns.
